Falls prevention and frailty physiotherapy at home

Balance, strength and confidence for older adults and anyone at risk of falling, assessed and treated in the home where falls actually happen.

Why treat falls at home?

Most falls happen at home, so that is the best place to find out why. I can watch how you move around your own rooms, stairs, bathroom and garden, check your walking aid and footwear, and spot hazards a clinic visit would miss.

Who it helps

  • People who have had a fall, or several
  • Anyone who feels unsteady or worried about falling
  • Older adults losing strength or stamina
  • People recovering after a hospital stay
  • People with a neurological condition that affects balance
  • Families worried about a parent or relative

What a falls assessment covers

  • How you walk, turn, sit, stand and get up from the floor
  • Balance, strength and stamina
  • Dizziness, which can be a cause of falls (vestibular rehabilitation)
  • Your walking aid, footwear and how you use them
  • Hazards around the home, with practical advice
  • Simple equipment that could help (equipment assessment)

Treatment

A personal programme of balance and strength exercises, built up gradually and practised in your own home. I also teach you and your family what to do if you do fall, including how to get up safely.

Questions

Can you visit a parent who lives alone?

Yes. Many home visits are arranged by a son or daughter. It helps if a family member can be there for the first visit, but it is not essential.

Can exercises really reduce falls?

Yes. Balance and strength exercise is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of falling, especially when it is tailored to you and done regularly.

Do you cover my area?

I visit homes, care homes and nursing homes across Northamptonshire. See the areas covered.

What if I have had a fall and am hurt?

If you are injured or cannot get up, call 999 or NHS 111. Physiotherapy is for recovery and prevention once you are medically safe.
